CONFIRMED COURSE DETAILS :

Course Date: May 14th – 21st May 2006

Tutor: Nikki Tinkler

Course Title: 'Quilting with a Difference'

About the tutor:

"Although I’ll machine quilt when the design necessitates, I’m a hand-quilter out of preference and like nothing better than putting needle into fabric myself"- Nikki Tinkler

Nikki has exhibited regularly for the last 11 years at both major quilt shows and within smaller, art gallery settings. She regularly passes on her expertise and knowledge by way of a variety of talks/workshops and has been a freelance teacher since 1977.

Nikki contributes articles and projects to patchwork and quilting journals regularly. It has been an exciting time for her with the publication of her first book and accompanying video "Quilting with a Difference". Watch this space for her next two books due 2005/2006.

During the 1990’s Nikki successfully completed the City & Guilds Certificates in Creative Studies for Patchwork & Quilting (both part l and part ll) and Preparing Working Designs. Recent times have seen the successful completion of a two-year study course, organised and run by The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles, which means that Nikki is now one of Britain’s first qualified and accredited Quilt Judges.

Course description:

Don’t think you’ll be lying in the pool the whole time…this is a chance to discover, explore, experiment with Shisha (little mirrors), beading, threads etc., and choosing quilting designs. Nikki’s signature technique "Quilting with a Difference", - tradition with a twist for lovers of hand-quilting and an opportunity to make the quilt, whether you’re a total beginner, a ‘stitch study course’ graduate or someone somewhere in between!

Before leaving England you’ll be sent instructions to make a very simple patchwork quilt top– (just squares and strips of fabric).

NB. If you genuinely have no time at home for this stage, facilities will be on hand to put this together on the first day of the workshop, but this will "eat into" your quilting time!) If you prefer, you could just bring a whole cloth project (i.e. no patchwork).

Course Date: 4th - 11th June 2006

Tutor: Angela Madden

Title: Beautiful Blooms

Course description:

All Skill Levels - Machine Sewn

By profession an Occupational therapist, Angela became addicted to patchwork about twenty years ago having always loved sewing and since then has actively resisted a cure!

As the author of eight books and the creator of three design tools, she has found time not only to win numerous awards at all our major shows including the Anna Piserera silver cup for "Pictorial Appliqué" at the British National Patchwork Championships 2001. Also, she has collected many prizes in the States, amongst them a 1st for "Innovative Appliqué" at the International Quilt Festival in Houston 2000. Angela’s workshop techniques are based to include Celtic, Celtic Reflections (using a mirror), Vines and Roses; Slice up a circle, perfect plaits and twists, peaceful Scenes (which combines traditional block patterns with complimentary landscape,) and Paradise Flowers.

All Angela’s work does not require special mathematical or needlework experience. You choose your own level of complexity. You can experiment to become comfortable with her methods and understand their application in an informal and fun class. By the end of the week you will have the knowledge and confidence to complete the top of a fair sized wall hanging (the size is up to you) and probably get it at lease partially if not completely quilted - stretch your imagination and your design skills.

Tutor: Gail Lawther

Course description: Stained Glass Patchwork – the inside story!

Do you like the sound of a patchwork technique that's simple, quick, very forgiving, and yet produces spectacular results in a short space of time?
Would you like to learn a method that avoids all the fuss of quarter-inch seams, matching points and seams, and just lets you get on with the creative bit? Even when you're producing traditional block designs.
How about a technique that you can adapt to your own preferences -  hand or machine stitching and quilting, traditional or contemporary design? One where you can add embellishment, beading, embroidery or fabric painting if you wish, or just leave your work plain. And one which allows novice quilters and experienced quilters alike to produce stunning quilts.

If you answered 'yes' to any of the above, this is just the course for you! And if you thought you knew about stained glass patchwork, you'll be astonished at just how much more you'll learn during this course.

During our week in the sunshine, we'll be exploring the wonderful, versatile technique of stained glass patchwork, giving you tasters of the many ways in which you can create and adapt designs. You'll put together a basic design early in the week, which will show you just how easy and quick the method is, and you'll also have the chance to build up plenty of other small designs and samples using variations of the technique. You'll come away with your head full of new ideas and inspirations.

 Among the things we'll cover are:

* the basic technique - how a design is built up
* using different kinds of bias binding
* creating smooth curves, crisp corners and perfect points
* stitching and quilting designs by hand and machine
* taming challenging fabrics: silks, metallics, velvets, lace etc
* using fusible bias binding
* working with bonding web
* straight-line designs
* adapting traditional block designs for stained glass patchwork
* embellishing your work, including crazy stained glass patchwork
* stained glass stitchery - creating designs using machine satin stitch
* designing your own stained glass patchwork projects
I'll have lots of examples of the technique with me to inspire you, and you'll also have a chance to browse through a portfolio of my bigger quilts made using the technique.

And don't be put off by the thought of making your own bias binding; unless you particularly enjoy making it, do what I do and buy it ready-made - then you're ready to get on with the fun bit of creating quilts.
I'll look forward to seeing you in Spain!

Tutor: Lynne Edwards

Course Title: Fold it and Curve it / Triangular Treats

Lynne Edwards is an Internationally- known quilt designer, teacher and author of many books. She has presented exhibits, classes and lectures in the United States, Canada, England, France, Australia and South Africa with Spain soon to be added! Twenty- five years ago, Lynne began developing and teaching a structured learning course for quilters teaching a wide range of basic skills. From this work came her book The Sampler Quilt Book, which has been widely adopted for such courses in England and elsewhere. Her quilts have been exhibited in Houston, Chicago, The Netherlands, Germany and Austria. She was also included in the Nihon Vogue book, "88 Quilt Leaders of the World". Lynne has published numerous books and articles and has co-edited the magazine, "The Quilters’ Review", published by The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles.

Lynne is the acknowledged authority on Cathedral Window quilts, introducing many to the design possibilities using this age-old technique. Her book,, Through the Windows and Beyond, was published in 1995. Even though it is has been out of print for several years, it is constantly requested by quilters worldwide and so she is working on a revised and expanded version.

In 1992, Lynne won The International Quilt Association’s Jewel Pearce Patterson Scholarship, which is awarded for outstanding qualities as a teacher. In 2000, she was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award by The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles and, in 2002, was awarded the prestigious Amy Emms Memorial Trophy at the annual British National Quilt Show, "Quilts UK".

Utilizing her wide experience with the tools used by quilters, several years ago Lynne began working with a British company, Creative Grids, to create a new line of non-slip rulers for use with the rotary cutter in a variety of shapes and widths, along with the patterns illustrating their use. She has also developed a line of paint stencils for décor and fabric, which are sold by the American company, Stensource.

Course description:

Fold it and Curve it

Cathedral Window is Lynne’s speciality and here is the chance for students to learn all the tips for making this traditional technique and several variations in design and shape, plus time to develop individual ideas and designs. In addition, there are more origami-like techniques and Cathedral look-alikes to be tried and explored.

Triangular Treats

As an alternative a very different area of patchwork is offered. Students can learn to use the 60o ruler to create several quick-machined designs including Magic Lantern and an origami Christmas Wreath.
